Little hidden gem of a place. The car park is a good size, you can purchase food and drinks. There is a outside play area, the children loved it as did us adults.
We'll laid out museum in restored buildings of the Lion Salt Works. Good for a rainy day as a lot of the area is indoors. Bright and colourful cafe can be entered without having to buy the museum ticket if you just want a cuppa. Good for kids with buttons to push and buildings to explore. Good for adults with an interest in all things salty.
More interesting than you'd think just based on the subject. Lots of information about how the local area has been affected by the salt industry.
This is a really interesting museum and well worth a visit. We were lucky enough to have a free guided tour from Juan, a volunteer guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and provided a thoroughly enjoyable and informative commentary on the exhibits and history of salt making in the area. The cafe in the visitor centre was modern, clean and warm and the coffee good. We didn't eat there so I can't comment on the food. The floors in the museum are quite uneven so slightly difficult if you are unsteady on your feet and many of the exhibits are outside or in unsheated buildings so warm clothing is a must in winter. I would definitely visit again.
Enlightening insight into how salt was extracted from brine from within the earth. It shows the history from before Roman times up to end of production in 1980. They have done a fantastic job at keeping the original building and production areas in place. There are lifts in place to give wheelchair users full access to the site. Nice restaurant and toilet facilities. Good outside space to have a picnic and children play area to help keep the cost down. I was in my own and spent around 90 minutes to walk around the musium reading all the information boards.
