Interesting bit of Victorian engineering. No boat trips or lift ride running when we visited. Whole area wheelchair accessible, but assistance is needed on some steeper gradients.
This place is really good to learn about the history of the canal and it's importance. All areas of this site are accessible from parking to the visitor centre to the lift. Whether you're visual y impaired or a wheel chair user you'll get to experience all areas. If going in the summer consider a pick nick as there is enough room. I'm visually impaired and really enjoyed our visit. Fyi there is a gift shop and a cafe.
Great free family day out. Boat lift is closed over the winter (operates from March). Excellent child's play area and cafe is good value. Highly recommend the nature park next door.
Great time at the visitors center. The video on the history was shockingly engaging and funny (think Monty Python) for story of engineering. It is great that these industrial triumphs are being preserved and renovated. Food and drinks were good also and a huge selection of souvenirs. There were Santa cruises on when we arrived (fully booked!) and looked ot be many events during the year.
Fantastic place to visit that is full of history. As you wander around the exhibition you will learn about the industrial revolution and how the boat lift was constructed. It is a marvel of engineering and a joy to look at it in operation. You can have a short boat trip and see first hand how the lift works. There is a shop for souvenirs and a very clean cafe with toilets at hands. A great day out with or without the family.
